Race debut for Hazelwood at Symmons Plains
Practice 3: 5th
Race 7: 22nd
Todd Hazelwood made his Supercars Championship race debut in Tasmania today, setting foot on the Symmons Plains circuit for practice, qualifying and Race 7 of the season.
The 22-year-old raced hard in Race 7, claiming 22nd place in the 120-kilometre race.
“Pleased to grad some good points after what was a promising day … the race was tough and we had some good battles,” Hazelwood said.
“It was a shame not being able to make a couple of spots towards the end of the race as we had good speed, I made an error and flat spotted my right front tyre that hurt us right at the end of the race.
“Wes [McDougall – engineer] and I will be working all night to make sure we bounce back strong tomorrow.
“It’s an all-new day with practice, qualifying before a long 200-kilometre race.”
Today’s practice session saw Hazelwood clock the fifth fastest time, adding that it’s good to see the car progressing with set-up.
“The hardest part about days like today is that we have showed some great signs of speed, but just haven’t had the result to show it,” Hazelwood said.
“I really believe we have made great progress with the chassis today and the team have done an awesome job all day.
“I also feel we have good pace, so hopefully we can qualify well and get the Bigmate Racing Supercar in the front battle pack.”
The Matt Stone Racing team have a big Sunday in-store, with their two Dunlop Super2 Series entries with Bryce Fullwood and Tyler Greenbury, as well as fellow Bigmate Racing driver Jason Gomersall competing in Touring Car Masters.
Gomersall walked away with a career-best result today, taking the first race win of the round in the Touring Car Masters.
The Bigmate Racing Supercar will be back on track tomorrow for a further practice session, before qualifying and Race 8 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.
